Ehrler Franck

Franck Ehrler (b. 1966) is a French-born designer and visual artist known for his satirical illustrations and fine work with glass. Educated in France, he began his artistic career working with ceramics and exploring traditional French glassmaking techniques. In 1992, however, his path took a decisive turn when he moved to Murano, the historic island of Venetian glass, to deepen his knowledge of the medium.

In Murano, Ehrler was apprenticed for several years to master Lino Tagliapietra, who introduced him to a more intimate, almost “fusional” relationship with glass, an experience that profoundly shaped Ehrler's approach. Thanks to this mentor, he learned to “maîtriser la materia divina” and appreciated glass for its vital, incandescent nature, so different from the cold rigidity of ceramics.

Ehrler's early glass works, made in the 1990s, include a particular series of geometrically structured animals. Created in collaboration with Andrea Zilio, these works are based on the simplicity of the parallelepiped, a form he favors for its tactile appeal and ease of manipulation. The animals, rendered in striking and unnatural colors, are designed through a process of geometric synthesis, emphasizing the most iconic features of each creature. From the stylized trunk of an elephant to the crest of a lion, from the giraffe to the monolithic bull.
