I really enjoyed reading the reflections of the various artists: I have met some of them personally and recognize that rare quality that we in Italy call “parlare come si mangia” (speaking as you eat). There are no beating around the bush or pretentious poses, just direct, sincere thoughts dictated by experience and a deep connection with glass and Murano. Different voices emerge, sometimes sharp, sometimes full of nostalgia, but always authentic. It is precisely this imperfect chorus, made up of strong characters and heart, that makes the reading lively and engaging, providing a human and true portrait of a community that continues to question its past and its future.
Murano is not just a place of production, but an idea, an identity that has lived in the collective imagination for centuries. Its glassmaking and artistic heritage is among the most precious in the Venetian lagoon and represents much more than a tradition to be preserved: it is a living resource, capable of generating economic development, cultural growth, and social cohesion for the entire island. However, this strong identification between the territory and glass has sometimes ended up becoming a limitation, entrusting renewal to a few enlightened figures rather than to a shared vision. The book invites us to reverse this perspective and rethink the future of Murano, starting from an essential principle: culture must guide production, not the other way around. To do this, it is necessary to return to the origins, rediscover the historical memory of the island, and recognize it as the true capital on which to build a new balance between tradition, innovation, and identity.
