Born in Santiago (Chile) in 1911. After architectural studies, he moved to Europe in 1933 to work in Le Corbusier's workshop in Paris. In 1938 he first joined the Surrealism movement and subsequently the Informal one. During the war he went to New York and had a strong influence on american painting. For Fucina Degli Angeli he designed several works, among them his famous piece "Totem".
Matta passed away in Civitavecchia, Rome, on November 23, 2002.
